Folliculitis

Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicles, typically caused by bacterial or fungal infections.

Types:

1. Bacterial folliculitis (Staphylococcus aureus)
2. Fungal folliculitis (Malassezia)
3. Viral folliculitis (herpes simplex)
4. Ingrown hair folliculitis

Symptoms:

1. Redness and swelling around hair follicles
2. Pus-filled bumps or pustules
3. Itching or tenderness
4. Crusting or scabbing
5. Hair loss or breakage

Treatment:

1. Topical antibiotics (cream or ointment)
2. Oral antibiotics (severe cases)
3. Antifungal medications (fungal folliculitis)
4. Warm compresses
5. Good hygiene and skin care

Prevention:

1. Keep skin clean and dry
2. Avoid tight clothing
3. Use gentle hair removal methods
4. Avoid sharing personal care items
5. Maintain good hygiene during sports activities

Complications:

1. Abscesses or cellulitis
2. Scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
3. Chronic or recurring folliculitis
4. Infection spread to other areas
