Ankle Fracture

Ankle Fracture:

A break in one or more bones in the ankle joint, causing pain, swelling, and limited mobility.

Types:

1. Unstable fracture: Requires surgical intervention
2. Stable fracture: Can be treated with immobilization and rehabilitation

Causes:

1. Trauma or direct blows to the ankle
2. Rolling, twisting, or landing awkwardly on the ankle
3. Osteoporosis or weakened bones

Symptoms:

1. Sudden, severe pain
2. Swelling and bruising
3. Limited ankle mobility
4. Deformity or abnormal ankle alignment

Treatment:

1. Immobilization with a cast or splint
2. Pain management with medication
3. Surgical intervention (for unstable fractures)
4. Rehabilitation and physical therapy

Complications:

1. Chronic pain or limited mobility
2. Arthritis or degenerative changes
3. Infection or wound complications
4. Malunion or nonunion (improper healing)

Recovery:

1. Stable fracture: 6-8 weeks
2. Unstable fracture: 12-16 weeks
