Frostbite

Frostbite is a cold-weather injury that occurs when skin and underlying tissues freeze due to prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.

Symptoms:

1. Numbness or tingling
2. Pale or blue-gray skin
3. Firm or hard skin
4. Blisters or sores
5. Pain or burning sensation

Degrees of Frostbite:

1. Frostnip (mild): affects skin only
2. Superficial frostbite: affects skin and underlying tissues
3. Deep frostbite: affects muscles, tendons, and nerves

Treatment:

1. Move to a warm location
2. Remove wet clothing
3. Immerse affected area in warm water (104°F - 107°F)
4. Avoid direct heat or rubbing
5. Monitor for infection
6. Medical attention if severe or blisters form

Prevention:

1. Dress warmly in layers
2. Stay dry
3. Limit exposure to cold
4. Use protective gear (gloves, hats, scarves)
5. Stay hydrated and energized

Complications:

1. Infection
2. Gangrene
3. Amputation
4. Long-term nerve damage
