Fractures in children

Fractures in children are common and differ from adult fractures due to their developing bones and growth plates.

Types of fractures in children:

1. Greenstick fracture: incomplete break, bone bends but doesn't break completely
2. Torus fracture: compression fracture, bone is compressed but not broken
3. Buckle fracture: distal radius fracture, wrist bone breaks
4. Growth plate fracture: affects bone growth and development
5. Epiphyseal fracture: affects joint surface and growth plate

Causes:

1. Falls
2. Sports injuries
3. Child abuse
4. Accidents
5. Birth injuries

Symptoms:

1. Pain
2. Swelling
3. Bruising
4. Limited mobility
5. Deformity

Treatment:

1. Immobilization (cast or splint)
2. Pain management
3. Reduction (aligning bone fragments)
4. Surgery (if necessary)
5. Monitoring for growth plate damage

Complications:

1. Growth plate damage
2. Deformity
3. Limited mobility
4. Arthritis
5. Osteonecrosis (bone death)
