Acromioclavicular

Acromioclavicular (AC) Separation Surgery:

A surgical procedure to treat a severe AC joint separation, where the collarbone (clavicle) separates from the shoulder blade (acromion).

Indications:

1. Severe separation (Grade 3-5)
2. Chronic instability or pain
3. Failed conservative treatment
4. Athletes or individuals requiring high shoulder mobility

Surgical Techniques:

1. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF)
2. Arthroscopic-assisted repair
3. Reconstruction using grafts or implants

Procedure:

1. Anesthesia and positioning
2. Incision and exposure of the AC joint
3. Reduction and stabilization of the joint
4. Fixation using plates, screws, or anchors
5. Closure and rehabilitation

Recovery:

1. Immediate post-op: pain management, ice, and rest
2. Short-term (0-6 weeks): rehabilitation, physical therapy, and strengthening exercises
3. Mid-term (6-12 weeks): progressive strengthening and functional training
4. Long-term (3-6 months): return to sports and activities

Risks and Complications:

1. Infection
2. Nerve or blood vessel damage
3. Hardware failure or loosening
4. Chronic pain or stiffness
5. Recurrent instability
