Acromioclavicular

Acromioclavicular (AC) Separation (Separated Shoulder):

An injury to the joint between the collarbone (clavicle) and shoulder blade (acromion), causing pain, swelling, and limited mobility.

Causes:

1. Direct blow to the shoulder
2. Fall onto an outstretched hand
3. Sports injuries (e.g., football, hockey)
4. Car accidents

Symptoms:

1. Pain and tenderness
2. Swelling and bruising
3. Limited shoulder mobility
4. Deformity or bump at the joint
5. Grinding or snapping sensation

Grades:

1. Mild (Grade 1): slight separation
2. Moderate (Grade 2): partial separation
3. Severe (Grade 3-5): complete separation

Treatment:

1. Conservative:
    - Pain management
    - Rest and ice
    - Physical therapy
    - Bracing or taping
2. Surgical:
    - Indicated for severe separations or failed conservative treatment

Recovery:

1. Conservative: 2-6 weeks
2. Surgical: 3-6 months
