Corneal abrasion

Corneal abrasion is a superficial scratch or injury to the cornea, the clear layer on the front of the eye.

Causes:

1. Foreign objects (e.g., dust, sand, contact lenses)
2. Fingernails or other sharp objects
3. Chemical splashes
4. Eye rubbing or trauma
5. Contact lens misuse

Symptoms:

1. Eye pain or discomfort
2. Blurred vision
3. Sensitivity to light
4. Redness and inflammation
5. Excessive tearing
6. Feeling of something in the eye

Treatment:

1. Antibiotic ointment or drops to prevent infection
2. Pain relief medication
3. Protective shield or patch to cover the eye
4. Artificial tears for lubrication
5. Rest and avoiding rubbing the eye

Prevention:

1. Wear protective eyewear during activities
2. Handle contact lenses properly
3. Avoid touching or rubbing the eyes
4. Wear goggles during chemical handling
5. Keep children's fingernails trimmed
